Cross-firing Leads

“My horse won’t turn to the left without dropping the shoulder.”

or

“My horse is only picking up the right lead and never the left.”

Most owners with these problems are over lunging to one side instead of equally to both sides.

As a rider and trainer, it is imperative that each horse is “Balanced” especially for trail riding.

This Andalusian mare I have in for training at the moment is a perfect example of both. She has sat in pasture for a while and has too much muscle on her right side verses the left. Riding in a good light headset will help in the 10-20 meter circles but you must keep the shoulder up when tracking to the left at the trot.

As she improves muscle balance, we will add poles and hills to her workout routine on a line and under saddle.
